The Scirocco R Cup.

The Cup Scirocco is currently the most eco-friendly racing car in the world: its 2.0-litre TSI engine is powered by natural gas, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent in comparison to conventional fuels. For racing use, the Volkswagen technicians have specially optimised the TSI engine to run on CNG (‘compressed natural gas’). The result is a full 235 hp and an impressive 275 newton metres of torque.

One particular highlight is the innovative push-to-pass system: at the touch of a button, the drivers can briefly increase the charging pressure and release an extra 50 horsepower, guaranteeing thrilling overtaking manoeuvres and uncompromising wheel-on-wheel duels.

In terms of power transmission, the technical team has opted for the direct-shift gearbox (DSG), which Volkswagen fits on numerous road models. The dual-clutch transmission with six steps is controlled using a shift paddle on the steering wheel. A gear lever is also available in the centre console.

There is also a big focus on safety in the Scirocco R Cup: the Cup Scirocco has been equipped with a roll cage and a fire extinguishing system in line with FIA norms. The tank is protected by the roll cage. Also on board is a racing seat with padded head protection. A six-point safety harness and the obligatory HANS system protect the driver in the event of an accident.
